The word ‘sleepover’ has childish connotations. Sleepovers were a standard birthday party activity when I was growing up and often involved movies, games, snacks, midnight feasts and not a lot of sleeping!
As an adult, you may no longer have ‘sleepovers’ but there will inevitably still be occasions when you stay over at a friend’s house. This could be after a party or event, when travelling or just for fun. Depending on the nature of the stay, you might have a spare bedroom to yourself or you might be sleeping on the sofa, the floor or sharing a room with several friends. You might not call it a sleepover but it basically is one, even though it might not be as wild as the sleepovers of your childhood or teenage years!
This is going to be a practical post where I will share a list of things to pack for an overnight stay at a friend’s house. Hopefully, this list will provide a shortcut to help you pack faster, and will ensure you don’t forget any of the essentials!

Clothing
Did you ever go to a sleepover and forget to pack underwear for the next day? I admit this has happened to me! Here are the clothing essentials you will need:
- Pyjamas
- Clothes for the next day, including underwear!
Bathroom and beauty items
This is the biggest category of things you’ll need to pack for a sleepover since your stay will involve getting ready for bed and getting ready in the morning. You might be able to borrow some of these items from your friends, such as shower products, towels and hair styling tools. Finding out in advance will save you from packing so many things.

Health and wellbeing
If you take any regular medications, supplements or remedies at night or in the morning, it’s important to remember to bring them with you to ensure your continued wellbeing.
It’s a good idea to bring a filled water bottle in case you get thirsty at night and don’t want to disturb anyone by getting water.
- Medications
- Supplements
- Anxiety remedies
- Tissues
- Water bottle
General essentials
It’s so easy to forget your phone charger and have little or no battery left in the morning. Don’t be that person! Here are some general essentials you’ll want to bring to a sleepover:
- Purse / wallet
- Phone
- Phone charger
- Bedding/sleeping bag, if you are bringing your own
- Plastic bags (always useful for storing your dirty clothes or any rubbish you produce)
Entertainment
Depending on the occasion, you might want to bring some activities to do with the people you are staying with. In any case, it’s always a good idea to bring a book to read in case you can’t sleep at night, or if you wake up earlier than everyone else.
- Book
- Puzzle book
- Pack of cards
- Board games
- Earphones (in case you want to listen to music or watch videos on your phone when others are sleeping)
