5 Tips To Streamline Your Laundry Routine

1. Have designated wash days

Having designated wash days is a simple way to stay organised with your laundry. Generally, one day a week will be enough, but you might need two days if your family produces a lot of dirty clothes. I recommend choosing a day when you are usually free – maybe a Sunday or a weekday evening when you have no regular commitments. If you are ever busy on your wash day, you could just roll your laundry over to the next day.

I recommend actually writing down your wash days in your diary or planner. This will help you remember to do your laundry on those days, especially when you are first building the routine.

2. Share out laundry tasks

This tip obviously doesn’t apply if you live alone, but if you live with family or friends, it’s a good idea to share out laundry tasks. Maybe each household member (apart from young children) can do their own laundry? Or each person can have a designated task, for example, one person can put the laundry on and someone else can be in charge of putting it away.

3. Separate your laundry by colour into different laundry bags

It’s a good idea to separate your laundry by colour, to make sure that the light colours don’t get stained. I used to put all my laundry into one bag, and then when the time came to do my laundry, I would separate out the colours into lights and darks. In retrospect, this was such an inefficient way of doing things! It makes so much more sense to separate your laundry by colour into different laundry bags. This brings me to my featured product for this post – the ATLINIA Natural Linen Laundry Bags.

Who are ATLINIA?

ATLINIA is an eco-friendly home textiles brand that produces beautiful homeware items made from natural, organic materials including linen, hemp and organic cotton. They specialise in linen, and their linen is grown sustainably and organically in Normandy, France. Linen is the perfect fabric for homewares because it is soft, comfortable, has a rustic look and is sustainable and long-lasting.

ATLINIA kindly gifted me this set of three laundry bags made from a linen-cotton blend. The bags are a natural oatmeal colour and they feature ATLINIA’s slogan, ‘Breath of Nature’. They all have a zip, and also a loop for hanging the bags up. The bags feel sturdy and well-made, and the material is soft. A characteristic of linen is that it will get softer over time. This is great news for my clothes because they will be protected in these soft laundry bags.

So far, I’ve been putting my dark colours into the largest laundry bag, my light colours into the medium bag and any delicate items into the small bag. It makes things so much easier for me when I’m doing my laundry because I can easily see how much laundry has built up in each colour, so I know what to wash next.

4. Know the capacity of your washing machine

It’s a good idea to figure out how much laundry fits in your machine for one load, and how that corresponds to your laundry bags. That way, you’ll know that when your bag(s) get to a certain fullness, it’s time to put a load of washing on. This is a good way to stay on top of your laundry because you’ll do it as soon as there’s enough (of that colour) to fill the washing machine.

5. Make the most of sunny days to hang laundry outside

I live in the UK which is notorious for its changeable weather. Because of this, when we get a warm, sunny day, I automatically think ‘it’s a good day for laundry!’. When it’s sunny, you can hang your laundry to dry outside, which is better for your clothes than using a tumble drier, and much quicker than hanging them indoors. Depending on the temperature and breeze, they could be dry within a few hours. Another advantage of hanging your laundry outside is that the sun has a bleaching effect to make your white clothes whiter!
