Gardening is a great hobby for all kinds of reasons. It’s good exercise, it’s helpful for your mental health, and it gives you a gorgeous reward for all your hard work. What could be better?
Gardening can often seem like a seasonal activity that you can only do during the spring and summer. On that assumption, you’d only get to enjoy your hobby for half the year. Luckily, the reality is that there are many ways to work on your garden all year round. Here are 4 ways to consider:
4 Ways To Work On Your Garden All Year Round
1. Get a shed
When it comes to being able to enjoy gardening all year round, a shed is a must, so take a look at some good quality, cheap sheds and pick one that will fit in the space you have, and look good in your garden at the same time.
The reason a garden shed is such a good idea is that it gives you a dedicated space to store your tools, supplies, and equipment, so you can not only keep them nice and organised, but also protect them during the winter when the weather might be cold and wet. Plus, a shed gives you a comfortable space for potting plants or coming up with a plan for the next growing season, so even if you’re not out in the garden itself, you can still enjoy your hobby.

2. Extend the growing season
Another way to enjoy working on your garden all year round is to extend the growing season by using various techniques and tools. One thing that’s very popular and that you might like to do is to use cold frames, but you can also add a greenhouse to your garden if you have the room.
Whatever you do, if you can find a way to start your seeds off earlier in the year or keep your plants growing longer after summer, you’ll get more enjoyment out of them, so it’s definitely something to consider.
3. Indoor gardening
Although you’re not technically working on (or in) your garden when you do indoor gardening, you are still gardening, so it counts! You can still do the hobby you love, and you’ll get some great results while you’re waiting for the better weather to return.
You can grow all sorts of things indoors, like herbs, leafy greens, and even small vegetables – you’ll just need the right containers and some grow lights because real sunshine will be in short supply. The great thing about indoor gardening is that it keeps your skills sharp so you’re ready for when you can go outside again, and you’ll also get fresh produce even in the coldest months – it’s a win-win.
Of course, another form of indoor gardening is to keep houseplants, which will keep you occupied with plant care all year round including watering, feeding and repotting.
4. Soil care
You’ll need healthy soil if you want to have a lovely garden, and even if you’re not growing or planting anything, you can still take care of your soil all year long. Start by regularly testing your soil’s pH and nutrient levels and use compost, manure, or other organic things to amend the pH as needed.
You can even keep the soil healthy by planting things like clover or rye (known as cover crops) during winter so it’s ready for your planting in the spring.

I don’t have an outside area or garden where I currently live, but I like the part about indoor gardening that was included here. I would like to start growing some herbs and this has reminded me that I can make that happen—thanks!
It’s great that anyone can do some gardening, even without a garden or outside area. I hope you get a chance to start growing some herbs!
Yes actually in some ways gardening is a year round hobby. Depending on the type of garden you have there can be many things to do in the winter months. Very informative post here!
