6 Compelling Reasons To Choose A Double-Storey Extension

This is a collaborative post.

Many people want their homes to have extensions; all that extra space can really come in handy. But, of course, it’s a tough decision to decide what type of extension to get. In this post, we look at some of the reasons why you might want to choose a double-storey extension. Here’s what you need to know:

Why Choose A Double-Storey Extension?

1. More Space For The Footprint

The first reason (and arguably main incentive) is that double-storey extensions provide more square footage for their footprint. With a single storey, you get extra space, but at the cost of some of your plot in a 1:1 ratio. But with a double-storey development, that ratio shifts to 2:1, which is a nice perk.

2. More Cost Effective

At the same time, double-story extensions can be more cost effective per square metre of land they require. The reason for this comes down to the ease of inserting a second floor under the roof. Much of the expense of an extension goes into one-off payments, like doing the foundations and connecting the plumbing. As a rule, adding a second floor is quite cheap and doesn’t require the addition of that many more materials to make it happen. While you might need some scaffolding, these costs are generally manageable.

3. Keep Outdoor Space

As mentioned before, adding a double-storey extension also allows you to keep more garden space, which can come at a premium in the city. What you don’t want is an extension that sprawls over the rear of your property and doesn’t leave you with any extra room to enjoy being outside. Ideally, you still want some room for recreation, gardening, and perhaps enjoying drinks outside with friends when they come over.

4. Increased Property Value

When it comes to selling your property, there’s usually quite a high demand for double-storey extensions. These look natural and show that you’ve been thoughtful. They are also usually built to a higher quality since they need to match the main building. Single-storey extensions often feel like random add-ons with poor quality roofing, but that’s not usually the case with double-storey.

Furthermore, double-storey extensions allow you to vary the type of additional living room you offer guests. These constructions are often far more useful for growing families, since you can add bedrooms, bathrooms, and playrooms.

5. Better Integration

Another perk is that double-storey extensions offer better integration into the rest of your home. They aren’t as jarring as a lot of single-storey alternatives that simply don’t look right most of the time.

This integration can also work around landscaping. Often, these extensions fit more naturally into the footprint of the building, allowing existing features to remain.

6. Greater Energy Efficiency

Finally, double-storey extensions offer superior energy efficiency in a lot of cases. The ability to stack the construction helps to retain more heat, especially during winter. Furthermore, it’s possible to pack cavity walls and attics with insulation, and add large windows to allow natural light to enter when it is available, as long as you follow local planning.
