The Best Guilt-Free Hot Chocolate Recipe

The only problem with hot chocolate is that it is usually not very healthy. It contains a lot of sugar, especially if you add extra cream and marshmallows! As well as containing sugar, traditional hot chocolate is made with dairy milk and often cream, which means it’s not suitable for vegans.

Luckily, it is possible to make delicious hot chocolate without sugar or dairy! My healthy, homemade hot chocolate recipe is suitable for vegans and it is sugar-free. It’s gluten-free too, but always check the labels of the ingredients you are using!

This guilt-free hot chocolate only requires 3 ingredients and it is quick and easy to make. You might be thinking, this hot chocolate cannot possibly taste nice. But in my opinion, it truly tastes like the real thing!

How is this hot chocolate sugar-free?

To make this recipe sugar-free, I use 100% dark chocolate. My favourite brand for this is Montezuma’s. They do 100% dark chocolate in a range of flavours, including orange and mint which are both great for making flavoured hot chocolate.

Without any sugar or sweetener, this hot chocolate would taste bitter. Instead of opting for artificial sweeteners (which can be just as unhealthy as sugar), I use yacón syrup.

If you haven’t heard of yacón syrup before, it’s a natural sweetener extracted from the roots of the yacón plant, which grows in South America. The main benefit of using yacón syrup is that it is high in fructooligosaccharides, which taste sweet but pass straight through us without being digested. Therefore it doesn’t increase our blood sugar levels as much as other sweeteners, making it a healthier option!

How To Make Sugar-Free Vegan Hot Chocolate

Ingredients

Method

  1. Fill a mug nearly to the top with milk.
  2. Pour the contents of the mug into a pan. (This is so that you make the right amount of hot chocolate that will fit in your mug! If you are making multiple cups for more people, repeat these two steps as many times as you need.)
  3. Gently heat the milk.
  4. Break off approximately 1 row of chocolate and drop it into the milk.
  5. Squeeze in a generous squeeze of yacon syrup.
  6. Stir the mixture as the chocolate melts.
  7. When it is hot and the chocolate is all mixed in, pour it back into your mug.
  8. Drink and enjoy!
