It’s nearly February which means Valentine’s Day is coming around soon. If you’re planning to celebrate Valentine’s Day, whether you have a partner or want to show yourself some self-love, you might be wondering what gifts to buy that are a bit different from the usual flowers or chocolates. That’s where this gift guide comes in – I have put together a list of cosy and comforting hygge gifts that are perfect for Valentine’s Day 2023.

What is hygge?

You’ve probably heard the buzzword ‘hygge’ (pronounced hoo-guh or hue-guh), but what exactly does it mean? According to Wikipedia, hygge is “a word in Danish and Norwegian that describes a mood of cosiness and ‘comfortable conviviality’ with feelings of wellness and contentment” To put it simply, hygge is all about cosiness, comfort and wellbeing. This is the perfect concept to link together with Valentine’s day which is all about love and care. I hope you find some things you like in this guide, whether you are buying for a significant other or treating yourself.

Hygge Gift Guide For Valentine's Day

Winter accessories from Trendhim

By mid-February, we are nearing the end of winter, but we all know how cold it can sometimes be in March and April. Therefore it’s definitely not too late to gift warm winter accessories to your loved one. Hats and scarves fit well into the category of hygge gifts because they are so cosy and warm. Trendhim is the perfect place to shop for these because they have a wide selection of winter scarves and beanies.

As the name suggests, all the products from Trendhim are aimed at men but the majority would work for any gender. They stock 13 brands with many items that are only available through Trendhim. I was kindly gifted the Sidegren Hiems | Sand Recycled Cotton Scarf and the Fawler Grey Kyler Kite Lightweight Organic Cotton Beanie to include in this gift guide. I’m in love with the quality and cosiness of both of these items!

A grey beanie hat and a light brown scarf.

The scarf is made from sustainable recycled cotton and it feels soft yet heavy and high quality. I’ve tried it on and it is lovely and warm! It comes in a range of colours but I chose the neutral ‘sand’ colour which is so stylish and fashionable and will go with pretty much anything.

The organic cotton beanie hat is simple and lightweight, which makes it perfect for late winter and early spring when the temperature is starting to warm up but is still a bit chilly. The rim can be folded over which means it can be adjusted to any head size. Like the scarf, this also comes in a variety of colours and I went for the grey. Again this is a neutral and subtle colour which makes it very versatile.

I loved the packaging that my Trendhim items arrived in. Each item was packed in a recycled paper envelope, held closed with a bulldog clip. The clips themselves are great quality and definitely reusable! The envelopes were packed snugly in a cardboard box with no excess packaging.

Overall I’m so pleased with this scarf and hat. To be honest, almost anything from Trendhim would make a lovely hygge Valentine’s gift so I do recommend having a browse of their website.

A houseplant in a nice pot

Plants are known to boost your mood and make you feel happier, so I think a houseplant would perfectly fit the description of hygge, especially if it is in a nice pot. There are so many great reasons to own houseplants so you can’t go wrong with gifting one to your loved one or yourself. For a Valentine’s Day touch, get a pot that is pink or red, or even look for a plant that has red or pink leaves or flowers. It makes a great alternative to the traditional Valentine’s bunch of flowers because plants will (hopefully) last for much longer.

Hot chocolate

Hot chocolate is quintessentially hygge so it would make a perfect hygge alternative to the traditional Valentine’s gift of chocolates. There are plenty of hot chocolate brands out there to choose from, or you could even make your own hot chocolate and present them with a mugful as a personal touch to your Valentine’s Day.

A book

When I think of hygge, one of the first images that comes to mind is curling up in front of the fire with a good book. That’s why I think it’s an obvious choice to include a book in this list of hygge gifts. A romance novel would make a great Valentine’s gift for a keen reader, or you could even get a book about hygge. One of the best-known is The Little Book of Hygge by Meik Wiking – this would make such a sweet gift and I am tempted to buy it for myself!

A hot water bottle

You can’t get much more cosy and hygge than a hot water bottle. I’ve been loving mine at this time of year for keeping me warm at night. A hot water bottle would make a cute and practical Valentine’s Day gift, especially when paired with a pink or red hot water bottle cover.

A pie

This might seem like a strange gift idea, but I was inspired by Wikipedia which mentioned pies in a list of typically hygge things. If you or your Valentine is a fan of food, why not get (or make) them a sweet or savoury pie for Valentine’s Day, to enjoy as a comforting meal? I am particularly a fan of Pieminister because they have a wide range of vegan pies.

A jigsaw puzzle

Doing a jigsaw puzzle is one of the most hygge activities I can think of, so it’s well worth including in this list of hygge gifts. A puzzle with a cute or romantic image would make a wonderful Valentine’s Day gift, or you could even get a personalised jigsaw made of a photo of you and your loved one, or something meaningful to you.

New bedding

The bed has a significant place in most couples’ relationships, but even if you’re single I’m sure you love your bed! So new bedding is a great Valentine’s gift and it certainly fits into the category of hygge. Maybe opt for pink or red bedding or a romantic design such as flowers or hearts.

Pyjamas

Along a similar theme to bedding, pyjamas would make a great hygge gift for Valentine’s Day, especially if they are Valentine’s themed in some way. If you are a couple, you could get matching pyjamas so you can cosy up together as a matching pair.

A candle

Candles are another quintessential hygge item and they have romantic associations too – think romantic candlelit dinners. A scented candle would make an ideal Valentine’s Day gift for yourself or your significant other, to fill your home with a soft glow and a comforting scent. Look for red or pink candles and/or ones with a romantic scent such as rose or vanilla.

Will you be buying any hygge gifts for Valentine’s Day?

I hope you’ve enjoyed reading this gift guide and that it’s given you some inspiration. If you don’t have a significant other to buy gifts for, why not show some love to a friend or family member, or treat yourself to a few cosy hygge gifts to boost your wellbeing this February?

Whether you are celebrating Valentine’s Day or not, I wish you all a hygge and love-filled month!
