8 Things You Should Always Do When Decluttering

This is a collaborative post.

Clutter can really cramp your style, so it is a good idea to have a clean-out every once in a while, to keep things manageable and keep your space clean, and attractive, right? But, when you are decluttering, there are a few things you should always do…

8 Things You Should Always Do When Decluttering

1. Dress for Success

Yes, you read that right. Pop on your most outrageous, motivational playlist and don your comfiest, battle-ready attire. You’ll need all the morale you can muster, and let’s face it, decluttering in your Sunday best is about as practical as buttering toast with a spoon.

2. The Three-Bin Ballet

Start with three bins: Keep, Donate, and What Was I Thinking? This streamlined system forces quick decision-making and keeps you from developing an emotional attachment to that neon green jumper you wore once in 2003. It’s tough love at its best.

3. Embrace Your Inner Eco-Warrior with E-Waste Recycling

Electronic waste – bulky, ignored, and harder to shift than your uncle after Christmas dinner, right? Well, it doesn’t have to be! Be green and maintain your privacy by wiping data and recycling old electronics responsibly. From ancient mobile phones to that mysterious cable without a device, e waste recycling not only frees up space but also protects your digital past from ending up in the wrong hands.

4. The Nostalgia Trip

We all have those items that serve no purpose other than to catapult us back to a specific moment in time. Here’s a tip: digitise. Take photos of those sentimental items you never use. Old concert tickets, drawings, and even that collection of funky coasters can be immortalised digitally. Then, let the physical versions go. Your heart and your drawer space will thank you.

5. One In, One Out

This is less a decluttering tip and more a lifestyle choice. For every new item that crosses your threshold, something old should walk the plank. This keeps your newly decluttered world in a state of Zen-like equilibrium. Consider it the circle of life, for stuff.

6. The Hidden Gem Sweep

Look in places that usually escape your notice. Yes, this means braving the back of that wardrobe, the depths of under-bed storage, and—dare we say it—the garage. Surprising amounts of clutter can accumulate in these out-of-sight outposts, turning them into veritable Bermuda Triangles of junk.

7. The “Does It Spark Joy?” Question

Thank you, Marie Kondo, for giving us the ultimate clutter-busting weapon. Holding each object, ask yourself if it sparks joy. If it does, it stays. If the only spark is the static shock from your carpet, it’s time to say goodbye.

8. Reward Yourself

Decluttering is an intense emotional and physical workout. So, once you’ve dropped off your donations, recycled your e-waste, and taken out the trash, reward yourself. Whether it’s a relaxing bath, a cheeky takeaway, or an evening doing absolutely nothing surrounded by your beautifully decluttered space, make sure there’s a light at the end of the tidying tunnel.

Here’s to less clutter and a better space to live life to the full!
