I am always looking for ways to boost my health. Mental health is especially important to me because I have been working to overcome anxiety over the past few years. I know that physical and mental health are closely interlinked so I also try to keep my body as healthy as possible which, in turn, helps my mind.

One of the ways I care for my health is by trying various different supplements to discover what works for me. That’s why I was delighted when last month I was given an opportunity to try out Focus Supplements.

What are Focus Supplements?

Focus Supplements, as the name suggests, are a company that provides dietary supplements to support health and wellbeing. They were founded in 2015 as a simple eBay store, but have grown considerably over the years to become the successful company they are now.

Their supplements are of the highest quality and are fully accredited and manufactured in the UK. 90% of their range use natural fillers such as brown rice flour instead of synthetic fillers, so you can be confident that you are only putting natural substances into your body when you take these supplements.

Another great thing about this company is that they donate a percentage of every sale to the Alzheimer’s Society. This demonstrates the company’s genuine care and desire to improve people’s health. It’s good to know that when buying from this company, your money is being used ethically to help others.

What supplements did I choose?

The two supplements I chose were L-Theanine and Magnesium Glycinate. Below, I will explain briefly what each of these supplements is for, and why I chose them. I have been trying these supplements for around 5 weeks now so I will share my experience with them so far, and any results I have noticed.

L-Theanine

L-Theanine is a compound found naturally in green tea. It is mostly taken for its cognitive enhancement and relaxing qualities. The following benefits are listed on the Focus Supplements website:

  • Promotes clear-headed focus.
  • Supports relaxation and sleep.
  • Improves memory and learning.
  • Induces alpha-wave brain activity.
  • Supports neurotransmitter balance.
  • Reduces the side effects of caffeine.

As you can see, the benefits of L-Theanine are wide-ranging. I took it mainly to help me relax more and to alleviate anxiety. I was also keen to experience the ‘clear-headed focus’ it claims to induce.

Magnesium Glycinate

Magnesium is an essential nutrient for humans and is required for over 300 different processes in our body. Unfortunately, Magnesium is not easily absorbed by our digestive systems, so it’s quite common to not be getting enough. In this supplement, Magnesium is paired with an amino acid called Glycine which makes it much easier to absorb. In fact, Magnesium Glycinate is thought to be the most bioavailable form of Magnesium available.

These are the benefits of Magnesium Glycinate supplements, as listed on the Focus Supplements website:

  • Promotes healthy bone formation
  • Enables calcium absorption from the digestive tract
  • Supports the production of new blood cells
  • Enables energy production in the body
  • Promotes relaxation and reduces the stress response
  • Supports a healthy sleep
  • Relaxes the muscles
  • Speeds muscle recovery
  • Supports liver detoxification

Again, the benefits are wide-ranging, but I mostly chose this supplement for its relaxation effects. It’s great to know that it can provide so many other benefits for my body as well as my mind.

My first impressions of Focus Supplements

The first thing I noticed about Focus Supplements is how attractive their packaging is. The bottles come in colourful cardboard boxes with pretty designs, included metallic detailing. The bottle labels have more muted colours but still match the outer boxes.

The boxes have full, detailed information about the contents, ingredients, nutrition information, allergens, suggested use and health warnings. All this information is repeated on the inner bottles so there is no need to keep the outer boxes unless you want to.

The supplements themselves are in smooth capsules which makes them easy to swallow. The L-Theanine capsules are small and the Magnesium Glycinate capsules are a little bigger, but I’ve had no trouble swallowing either of them.

Have I noticed any benefits from taking these supplements?

I have been taking the suggested dose of 2 Magnesium Glycinate capsules and 1 L-Theanine capsule every day, with my breakfast. I’ve been taking them for around 5 weeks now.

Interestingly, the first day after I started taking these supplements was a really good day. I had no anxiety at all, and I was relaxed and in a good mood for the whole day. I do occasionally have days like that so it’s hard to know whether it was because of the supplements or just a coincidence, but it did stand out to me.

Since then, my mood and anxiety levels have varied. It’s hard to tell whether these supplements are having an effect on my mental health because I take various other supplements as well. However, overall I have had a good month and I’ve felt quite balanced in situations I’m often anxious in. So the supplements may well have contributed towards that.

In terms of physical benefits, I haven’t noticed anything that has stood out to me, but thinking back, I have slept well recently and I haven’t had any joint pain that I occasionally have. I guess the fact that I haven’t noticed any problems is a good sign that these supplements may be working!

A practical benefit I have experienced is that I used to take Magnesium in the form of an oil that I would apply to my skin. I’ve found it so much easier and more convenient to take the capsules instead, so I think I will continue to take Magnesium in capsule form in the future.

How easy is it to order Focus Supplements?

Focus Supplements has a really great website that makes it so easy to figure out the best supplements for you. The supplements are organised into categories based on what they do, such as Focus & Memory, Hormonal Balance and Mood & Sleep. This makes it really easy to find the right supplements for your particular struggles. There’s even a quiz you can take! I took the quiz after I’d already received my supplements and Magnesium Glycinate was one of the supplements it recommended, so I made a good choice there.

Every supplement has a dedicated page that is packed with detailed information about what it does and how it works. It’s really interesting to read, and helpful for making an informed decision about which supplements to buy. Dietary requirements and allergens are clearly stated so it’s easy to find which supplements are vegan, vegetarian, gluten-free, dairy-free and more. The majority of supplements they sell are vegan, including the two that I ordered.

The supplements I received were in the smallest size bottle available, but you can also order larger bottles that work out as better value for money. Some of the supplements, including L-Theanine, are also available to buy in pure powder form if you prefer that to capsules.

Would I recommend Focus Supplements?

I would 100% recommend Focus Supplements. Everything about their website and products is so professional and such good quality and I feel I can really trust this brand. Their quality is reflected in the price – they are not the cheapest supplements out there, but the fact that they are high quality and fully accredited means you will be getting real value for your money, and hopefully better results.

Focus Supplements are a great, ethical company to support and I will definitely be buying from them again. If you could do with a boost to your health or wellbeing, I highly recommend checking out their website and picking up a few supplements to try!
