Magic by Mike Russell - Book Review

I was recently contacted by StrangeBooks asking if I would like to read and review their recently published book, Magic by Mike Russell. This sounded intriguing, so I said yes! I received a Kindle copy.

What is Magic about?

Magic is written from the point of view of Charlie Watson, a young man who was brought up by a magician. Naturally, he believes in magic! I don’t want to give away too much of the story and spoil the surprise, but the book comprises a series of events that affect Charlie’s belief and relationship with magic.

What is it like to read?

This book is written in short and simple sentences in a casual and conversational style, from the first-person perspective of Charlie. It was easy to read, and my first impression after reading chapter one was that it was a children’s book. However, It soon became clear in the next chapter that it is definitely not a children’s book because it contains some adult themes!

It certainly isn’t the genre of book that I would usually pick up. At first, I wasn’t sure if I was going to enjoy it, but the first few chapters got me intrigued. I was interested to see where it would go! By the time I got a few chapters in, I was definitely enjoying this book.

The book is full of unexpected twists and turns. I honestly had no idea what on Earth was going to happen next, at any point in the book! It was certainly not predictable. Such random and bizarre stuff happened that I totally didn’t expect, even when I had got used to it being quite a strange book! This made it very amusing at times.

The messages behind the Magic

As well as being a unique and amusing book, it contains some very real messages and lessons. I don’t want to give away any spoilers, but this book will certainly make its readers think, and potentially make them into a better, happier person. If everybody read this book, it could change the world – which is exactly what Charlie wanted within his world. Despite being a fantasy, this book is very relevant to real life!

Would I recommend Magic?

Yes, I would! It was different from anything I have ever read before, and I’m glad to have widened my horizons. I think it would be difficult NOT to enjoy this book, even if just for pure curiosity and amusement value. But as mentioned, there are also some real lessons to be gained from this book. I will be adding Mike Russell’s other books to my ‘to be read’ list!

You can find Magic on the StrangeBooks website, on Goodreads, or buy it on Amazon.

If you like the sound of this book, you might also like The Night Circus by Erin Morgenstern, which is another book with a magical theme.

I would rate Magic by Mike Russell 4 out of 5!

This sounds so interesting! I don’t think Ive read anything in this style before but from what you describe it sounds like something I’d be really into. I love a book that has unexpected Twists and underlying messages. I find some books can be way too frank in their messages or have no message at all which I find ruins the ‘magic’ of the story a bit. Will definitely be giving this a read, thanks for the suggestion! X
